Your primary responsibility would include providing personal care and companionship for those living with disability, disease, or old age. You would help with meal preparation, feeding, bathing, personal hygiene, and housekeeping duties. A healthcare worker or nurse may also direct you to assist with tasks like administering medication and collecting specimens (under their supervision). Most important, being a Personal Support Worker means you have to be patient and sensitive to your client’s needs.

Invaluable Personal Support Worker Skills

During the Personal Support Worker Certificate program, you will:

Provide care and companionship for individuals and families during periods of incapacitation, convalescence, or family disruption

Administer bedside and personal care to clients such as aid in ambulation, bathing, personal hygiene, and dressing and undressing

Plan and prepare meals and special diets, and feed or assist in feeding clients

Perform routine health-related duties such as changing non-sterile dressings, assisting in the administration of medications and collecting specimens under the general direction of a home care agency supervisor or nurse

Perform routine housekeeping duties such as laundry, washing dishes, and making beds

As a Personal Support Worker, you will provide personal care to seniors, persons with disabilities, and convalescent clients. Care is provided within the client’s residence, in which the Personal Support Worker may also reside. Personal Support Workers ensure the safety and well-being of their clients and demonstrate sensitivity and respect for each individual in their care.

Do you want to start your career in the growing healthcare industry? Are you passionate about helping people care for their emotional and physical well-being? If so, the NACC Personal Support Worker DE 2022 certificate program at Oxford College will set you up for a successful future.

A personal support worker (PSW) provides assistance in routine living activities such as: mobility, personal care and hygiene, ongoing medical conditions, and the management of household activities. As a trained PSW, you may look after patients in a home, hospital, and/or long-term care facility.

The NACC Personal Support Worker DE 2022 program delivers strong administrative and clinical skills and knowledge, the skills necessary to implement theories on topics such as cognitive and mental health issues and brain injuries, and the know-how to assist with patients’ medications. The completion of the in-class courses is followed by a 8-weeks clinical placement where you’ll get hands-on experience in the field.

Students enrolled in this program will receive:

  • Clinical work placement in a community and long-term care facility
  • National Association of Career Colleges (NACC) curriculum that maps to the Ontario provincial-approved training standard
  • Classrooms that simulate real-world healthcare setting, including hospital beds, wheelchairs and other required equipment
